If you haven’t been to Sydney before you might be worried about how you’re going to easily get around the city. You can stop worrying because we are going to explain it all to you!
Sydney is blessed with multiple public transport options, which make it a great place to visit whether for business or pleasure.
If you arrive by airplane you should be aware that the airport is quite close to the CBD and you won’t be spending a fortune to transport yourself to the city centre. You can easily take the train or a shuttle bus from the airport. Here’s the link to the train service timetables to help you plan your visit.
Public transport runs very frequently in Sydney. You shouldn’t wait more than 15 minutes for a train or bus in peak times. There will be lots of people travelling with you however, so be prepared for the crowds. School holidays and the Christmas period are particularly busy in New South Wales and much of this in concentrated in the Sydney CBD area.
Once you are in the city you have the option to use local buses or even the ferry service to get to your next destination. The ferries are fun to ride and can take you over to Manly and to Taronga Zoo. Riding the manly ferry is a typical tourist experience in Sydney.
The monorail, which used to service parts of the CBD, was decommissioned in 2013 unfortunately. That was a great way to get around and was really reasonably priced too.
If you’re up for a big day of sightseeing you should check out the Hop On – Hop Off bus. If you’ve travelled in any major cities of the world you will have seen these buses and maybe even tried them out. They are a fairly sweet deal since you pay once and then can get on and off as many times as you like. You can use every stop if you have the time and easily see the attractions of the city. Many of the stops from this bus are to free locations. This can be a really economical way to see the famous sites. Purchase a one-day pass or a multiple day pass to suit your travel itinerary.
If you plan to venture out of the city and visit other places such as the Blue Mountains then you’ll need to use another service to get there. Coach services run from the CBD and will comfortably take you to your destination. You can also take the train and arrive relaxed and refreshed to explore the area. Day trips can be a perfect way to explore and still return to your accommodation each night. If you prefer to stay over there are plenty of boutique accommodation options available.
Just remember, taxis are everywhere if you decide public transport isn’t for you. You’ll spend quite a bit more on a taxi but if that removes any anxiety you have about finding your way around an unfamiliar city, that might be just what you need.
