If you can get a week or two off work, there’s truly no better place to travel than Australia. It’s a fantastic mix of stunning beaches, natural parks, thriving city life, and of course, the great outback. But all these different things to see means one pair of shoes will not do the trick, and in fact, might ruin your vacation. Luckily, this guide to the must-have shoes for travelling in Australia has you and your precious feet covered!
1. Flip Flops
Australians love walking around in flip flops (or thongs, as they like to call them), so make sure you bring your favourite pair to look the part. They’re perfect for throwing on when you’re in a hurry to get to the beach, or just to walk around downtown on a sunny day. Plus, flip flops go with literally everything and they’re super easy to pack, so you definitely won’t regret stashing one or two pairs of these in your bag.
2. Hiking Boots
If there’s one thing you should make time for (besides the beach, obviously), it would be a hike in Australia. It doesn’t have to be hard—let’s not get crazy here—but you can’t leave Australia without having experienced the land and nature up close and personal. For this, a pair of flip flops will just not do. Pack a pair of breathable, broken-in hiking boots (see what type of boots you should bring for different climates here) so that you can actually focus on your surroundings and not the painful blisters that are forming on your feet.
3. Dressy Sandals
If you plan on hitting up a few nice restaurants or maybe a concert, it would be worth your while to pack a pair of dressier sandals so that you don’t look like a beach bum (unless that’s the look you’re going for, and hey, that’s okay too). Pair them with a comfortable dress, and you’ll be ready for wherever the night takes you.
4. Heels
Heels might be overkill for most people, especially if you’ve already thrown a pair of wedge sandals in your bag, but Australia actually has a fantastic nightlife scene. If your idea of a vacation is traipsing through the best bars the Down Under has to offer, then a rockin’ pair of heels will get you there. Make sure you choose a simple pair that matches multiple outfits to keep from overpacking.
5. Walking Shoes
For days when you just feel like exploring, make sure you have a comfortable pair of walking shoes ready. A pair of stylish sneakers with solid support should do the trick, and keep you comfortable without looking like too much of a tourist—the horror! After a long day of sightseeing, you definitely will appreciate some sole cushions and ankle support.
